Loss Prevention Corner

"Loss Prevention Corner" is a compilation of hundreds of practical tips to help you reduce your chances of having a loss, or to minimize your damage if you do. The tips are divided into categories such as Fire, Water Damage, Burglary, Identity Theft, and many more!

When buying a new home

1.

Change the locks on all exterior entrances, for improved security.

2.

Check that all windows and doors are secure. Improve window hardware as necessary. Security rods can be added to sliding windows and doors.

3.

Consider a security system.

4.

Install smoke detectors on each level of the home. Ensure that there is a smoke detector outside all sleeping areas. Replace existing batteries on smoke detectors and test them.

5.

Examine driveways and walkways for trip hazards. Undertake repairs when necessary.

6.

Replace exterior door hinges with interior hinges or change hinges to the non-removable type.

7.

Replace a standard strike plate with an extended strike plate, using hardened screws 2”-3” long.

8.

Install a heavy-duty “hook and eye” on the upper part of a storm door

9.

Replace sheet or plate glass with tempered or safety laminated glass.

10.

Install key locks or window pegs on window sashes.

11.

Examine the interior of the home for trip hazards. Loose or torn carpeting and damaged flooring should be repaired.

12.

Undertake improvements to all stairways, decks, porches, and landings where there is a risk of falling or stumbling.

13.

Review your home inspection report for any items that may require immediate improvement or further investigation. Address these areas as required.

14.

Install rain caps and vermin screens on all chimney flues, as necessary.

15.

Learn the location of the main shut-offs for the plumbing, heating, and electrical systems. If you attended the home inspection, these items should have been pointed out to you.
