Loss Prevention Corner

"Loss Prevention Corner" is a compilation of hundreds of practical tips to help you reduce your chances of having a loss, or to minimize your damage if you do. The tips are divided into categories such as Fire, Water Damage, Burglary, Identity Theft, and many more!

Renovating Your Home

1.

Don't allow the use of blow torches unless absolutely necessary. Careless use of propane torches or heat guns for plumbing or paint removal can cause fires.

2.

Hire a highly recommended contractor who has adequate insurance. Select a contractor who can produce reliable local references and certificates of insurance.

3.

Contact YOUR home's insurer or agent. They can help you establish what insurance coverage you should be requiring from your contractor(s).

4.

If possible, don't allow your fire or burglar alarms to be disconnected.

5.

Have a sufficient number of portable fire extinguishers distributed about the project.

6.

Beware of flammable fumes. At the end of a renovation, when floors are being sealed or varnished, your home is at a particular risk. Make sure that your contractor provides for proper ventilation, and extinguishes ALL pilot lights.

7.

Clean up every day. Accumulations of rubbish can present a serious fire hazard. Make sure scrap lumber, sawdust, cardboard containers and other debris are removed daily.

DISCLAIMER

During my 27 years as a Property and Casualty Insurance Agent in the Greater Boston area, I have been collecting, from many sources, lists of dos and don'ts related to various areas of Loss Prevention (also known as "Risk Management"). "Loss Prevention Corner' is a compilation of those Risk Management tips that we offer as POSSIBLE SUGGESTIONS. Each of these tips may or may not be appropriate at all times, since every situation is different. The tips are here for your consideration. You must decide which of them is right for you.
