Loss Prevention Corner

"Loss Prevention Corner" is a compilation of hundreds of practical tips to help you reduce your chances of having a loss, or to minimize your damage if you do. The tips are divided into categories such as Fire, Water Damage, Burglary, Identity Theft, and many more!

Protection from Lightning

Install proper lightning protection. Any system you choose should be in accordance with guidelines set forth by groups such as Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Install lightning rods on the roof of your home and large trees around your home to control and redirect the lightning's damaging effects. This lightning rod system should be installed by a UL- listed company.

Install voltage surge suppressors to limit the exposure of electronic equipment to excessive voltage spurts.

Install surge arresters to help divert power surges along utility lines away from source equipment.

Lightning may enter a house through anything that conducts electricity. Do not handle electrical appliances during a storm and stay away from all parts of the plumbing system. It is also not advisable to use the telephone during a thunderstorm. Do not shower or wash dishes.

Get off high ground and away from tall trees.

Keep away from all metal fences and other metal objects.

If you are swimming or in a boat make for the shore at once.

Never ride a horse or a bicycle in a thunderstorm. If you are driving, stay in your car. It is one of the safest places to be.

If you are outside, stay low to the ground, and make yourself as small as possible.

During my 27 years as a Property and Casualty Insurance Agent in the Greater Boston area, I have been collecting, from many sources, lists of dos and don'ts related to various areas of Loss Prevention (also known as "Risk Management"). "Loss Prevention Corner' is a compilation of those Risk Management tips that we offer as POSSIBLE SUGGESTIONS. Each of these tips may or may not be appropriate at all times, since every situation is different. The tips are here for your consideration. You must decide which of them is right for you.

Weekly Tip: Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. That way you will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place!
